Zoysia is a popular grass for home lawns. There are many varieties of zoysia from which to choose. The standard varieties for many years were Myer and Emerald. Myer was a coarser texture grass than the fine leaved Emerald. In recent years newer varieties of zoysia have entered the marketplace. Empire is one brand that has become popular for its rapid growth and its winter tolerance in the upstate of South Carolina.

In selecting a zoysia consider leaf texture, color, recoverablilty, wear and tear tolerance, mowing height, and availablity. Empire is popular for its color and texture. It can be mowed to one inch and it will recover quickly from wear and tear. It will go brown in the winter.
