Should I do a soil test?
Yes, it is important to know the fertility levels of your soil. Our soils are typically low in pH and in phosphorous. Without knowing what levels your soil has of these it is impossible to know how much lime and fertilize to apply to the soil before you install your sod.
Before I install my sod is there anything special I need to do?
It is important to prepare your soil properly for the type of grass you want to grow in your yard. If you need lime and phosphorous in the soil, it must be incorporated to a depth of 2 to 4 inches for the best results. After incorporating your lime and fertilizer, rake and grade the soil. Remove big rocks and other debris before installing the sod. If it is very hot and the soil is exceptionally hot, cool the temperature of the soil down by slightly moistening it with water. Create an envelope of moisture into which you will lay the sod. There will be moisture underneath the sod and when you water the sod you will have moisture on top of the sod.
